Research & Science Project

BONUS SEAMOUNT

Status

accomplished

The BONUS SEAMOUNT project has two main objectives:

  • 01.

To develop innovative remote sensing technologies for real-time sea surveying, analysis, and monitoring. These technologies integrate and optimize sensors within versatile underwater vehicles, adaptable to the specific objectives and characteristics of each mission. The vehicles are equipped with an efficient bionic communication system for the remote transmission of collected data. The technology will be efficient, user-friendly, and optimized for data acquisition, requiring minimal time and effort for deployment and recovery.
  • 02.

To test and deploy this technology in a complex Baltic Sea survey focused on detecting and monitoring submarine groundwater discharges (SGD) and studying seabed integrity. Simultaneous inspection of the seabed and water column will be conducted to gather complex data, enhancing the understanding of how seabed morphology and geological characteristics influence SGD occurrence. The most significant SGDs will undergo continuous monitoring to determine nutrient and pollutant fluxes, assess their role in the Baltic Sea’s nutrient balance and ecological status, and evaluate the impact of human activities. Integrated hydrological modeling will also be conducted in coastal catchments.

All collected data will be made available to the scientific community, authorities, and policymakers to improve understanding of the Baltic Sea and support maritime spatial planning.
